In difficult times, such as the recent pandemic, people’s faith is often tested. Whether it be religious belief, or simply faith in the hope that one day the world may be a better place, stressful times can be spiritually draining. “Tambula”, a new single from God’s House International Centre Music (stylized as GHIC), works to restore faith in these dark and uncertain times.
The song has both english lyrics as well as luganda. According to Caroline Mugagga Nalwanga, one of the group’s lead singers, the song was originally written in only the luganda dialect. Nalwanga also stated that she was particularly inspired by two uplifting verses in the bible: “ I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13), and “For nothing is impossible with God” (Luke 1:37).
The main chorus is a repetition of the luganda phrase “Tambula nange yesu/ ngumya mu maanyi go” and “Tambula nange yesu/ balabe obuyinza bwo” translates to “Walk with me jesus,/strengthen me in your power/ Walk with me jesus,/ they may see your might”. These deeply spiritual lyrics are positive and empowering for not only people of the christian faith, but for anyone who is willing to take the time to listen.
The blending of cultures through combining luganda and english in this track creates a joyful and inclusive tone. The lyrics are not only uplifting, but inviting as well. While many have lost hope or faith during the hardships that have occurred this past year, GHIC brings renewed strength and optimism with “Tambula”. The multitude of voices, all singing hopeful and empowering lyrics, is sure to bring a smile to any face, regardless of religious belief or practice.
